Will that (VSS gearing is wrong) cause my gear sensor to be off? Or is VSS and gear sensor are not related?

Hi guys,

I was datalogging my car and I noticed that the gear sensor doesn't seem to display correctly, especially at freeway speeds. When I'm on the freeway in 6th gear, the gear sensor displays 5. At times, in 5th gear, the gear sensor displays 4. And at times, in 4th gear, the gear sensor ...

I think what I'm going to do is rock but not have it "connected". That way, company is happy I'm representing their products, I'm happy that I'm not blowing up my ECU.
