Set Ignition timing - Realtime Update needed?

I found an old thread that was similar to the issue i'm seeing but its locked

My question, do I need to be in "realtime update" mode to use the "set ignition timing"?
I tried to check my timing last night, when I select set ignition timing, the car continued to behave as it was previously. The vehicle has 0* of timing on the low cam timing map at idle, and what i'm trying to do before changing that is confirm the mechanical timing is correct.
When I checked with a timing light last night (after selecting set igintion timing), the TDC mark was lining up instead of the 16* mark as I was hoping. Its either the timing is actually wrong, or I wasnt properly using the "set ignition timing" (which was set to 16*)
Any input?
