Can i just buy the sensor that comes in the innovate or PLX kit or do i need the controller to use a wideband?

No, you need a controller. Honda ECU's don't have the ability to control a wideband o2.

isnt it just a matter of converting voltage to af/lambda?

what controlling does the controller actually do

it just seems ridiculous that with an s300 i dont have the ability to skip the controller.

It's not that simple. I know that you need to control the heater on the o2 sensor, and calibrate the sensor occasionally. I'm betting these are beyond the ability of the Honda ECU, and the S300. This question has been asked many times before, and you can find more details if you spend a few minutes searching the forums.

You can get a small, in-line wideband o2 with controller on Ebay for $200.

The wideband sensor is actually a small air pump. There has to be a controller to open and close the pump. This is used to vary the amount of oxygen in the exhaust system so the sensor can read it.
